HOLLYWOOD CHAINSAW HOOKERS DVD (RETROMEDIA)
THE MOVIE: A Detective Jack Chandler is searching for a runaway named Samantha, played by Scream Queen Linnea Quigley. Jack does manage to find Samantha, but he also manges to find a cult of chainsaw weilding hookers: led by Gunner Hanson of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre fame.
Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers is by far director Fred Olen Rays masterpeice. The film, which was shot in five days at the modest budget of tweenty three thousand dollars is one of the funniest B-movies I've ever seen. The dialogue is just halarious with such great lines as, "You could knock me down with a pubic hair". The gores pretty cheesy, consisting mainly of blood and body parts flying at the chainsaw weilding hookers, but totally works for the comedic tone of the movie. We also get some great B-movies stars like Scream Queens Linnea Quigly and Michelle Bauer (AKA Michelle McLelean), as well as Leatherface himself, Gunner Hanson. If you like cheessy B-movies you have to own this flick, you definately wont be dissapointed.
BODY COUNT: 5
DEATHS:B (for their comedic tone) Numerous bloody chainsaw deaths, including a cleevage cutting scene.
PICTURE: B- Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers is presented in its original widescreen format and looks pretty good compared to the old VHS transfers. There is some slight grain, but its really not to bad.
SOUND: A
Pretty good, not the best though.
EXTRAS: B-
The extras on the disc are pretty good, we get some trailers, a "Making Of", a five chapter scene index, and Fred Olen Rays Nite Owl Theater. "The Making Of" is really cool, it mainly focuses on the problems that the cast faced working on such a low budget movie, and is very entertaining and informative. Fred Olen Rays Nite Owl Theater is just awesome. It reminds me of the old "Up All Nite" programs, and is a nice addition to this disc.
OVERALL:A-
Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers is a great low budget comedy. If your into cheesy B-movies, or Troma flicks you'll love it.

IDLE HANDS DVD (COLUMBIA)
THE MOVIE:C Anton Tobias is a channel-surfing, junk-food munching, couch patato burnout who cant control the murderous impulses of his recently possesed hand. With the help of his zombiefied buddies, Anton's got to stop the rampaging devil appendage before it takes total control of his life and ruins any chance he has with the class hottie.
Idle Hands is a pretty decent horror comedy, even though it does start to wear thin near the end. The movie is pretty much played for laughs, with Antons hand doing a bunch of crazy things like cat tossing. Gore wise theres not really much at all, exept a head getting severed which isnt really that bloody at all. The performances are decent with the exeption of Vivica Fox who plays a lame ass druid chick who's hunting for the possesed hand, which just ruined the movie in my eyes. Overall Idle Hands is a pretty good flick to waste a couple hours with, just dont expext to much more.
BODY COUNT: 9
DEATHS:C
We get such joys as death by fan, a decapatation, ball crushing, strangulation, and a bottle rammed into a head.
PICTURE:A
Idle Hands is presented in both its widescreen and fullscreen versions. The movie is clear of any film scratches and grain and looks great.
AUDIO:A
The audio is in Dolby Digital and sounds really good.
EXTRAS:C+
First we get a Making Of which is pretty lame and doesnt really cover much about the making of the film, it seems just like a promotional vice. Next theres a trailer for Idle Hands and for Cant Hardly Wait (did we really need this trailer). There's also 2 storyboard to film comparasons, which arnt very interesting. There is also a deleted scene which is actually the original ending, and in my opinion its good they didnt use it. Last but not least we get a commentary with director Rodman Flender and actors Elden Henson and Seth Green. The commentary is probrally the best extra on the whole disc, even though that isnt saying much. Flender definatly has a love for the horror genre and talks allot about how he tried to emulate scenes from Argento and his love for the genre, while Henson and Green make stupid jokes.
OVERALL:B-
Idle Hands is a pretty cool way to waste a couple of hours but not much more.

MAPLEWOODS DVD
THE MOVIE: B
Maplewoods is a film that revolves around a group of elite commandos who's mission is to clean up a military project gone awry known as Maplewoods. They are to enter a secret military compound and destroy all records and files as well as all the "speciemens" left when the project was abandonded. But theese are not your average lab expeirments, it seems the military using Nazi technology created an army of the dead to use in warfare and now they are hungry for some blood.
I found Maplewoods to be a pretty enjoyable zombie romp kinda in the tradition of the Romero zombie flicks. The film keeps at a good pace and the camerawork is very good considering the meager budget, even though a lack of special effects leaves allot to be disered. The acting was pretty good and overall the plot was enjoyable, except for a few momments which seemed a bit overdramatic. Its a shame that this didnt have a bigger budget and some more bloody effects, but for what it is Maplewoods is a pretty good little zombie yarn any zombie fan should checkm out.
BODY COUNT: 37
DEATHS: C
We many gunshot wounds as well as a couple stabbings, a nasty head crushing, and the typical zombie gut-munching.
PICTURE: B
Maplewoods looks to have been shot on DV and overall looks pretty good, except for a few night scenes that seems kinda dark and muddy which is typical with most digitally shot movies
SOUND: B
The sound is pretty good but some lines of dialogue are hard to hear.
EXTRAS: F
Unfortunately we get a scene selection and thats it.
OVERALL: C+
Maplewoods is a good Romero-esque zombie film, which really shows how a zombie film should be made. Personally I think Maplewoods is allot better than the slew of big budget zombie films such as House of the Dead and 28 Days Later which have been packing in audiences. The main place it failed to me was in the gore department which left more to be desired, as well as the bare bones treatment on the DVD. But if you long for good classic style Romero zombie flicks Id say definately give this one a shot.
